Named after the late former Principal, the Catherine Hughes building completed Somerville’s longstanding aspiration to offer undergraduates a place to learn, socialise and now also to sleep, within the College’s central Oxford site.

This Oxford institution, with such famous alumni as Margret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi, appointed architects Niall McLaughlin Architects to design this high-quality accommodation. A careful balance was achieved, addressing both the sensitive character of the Jericho Conversation Area in which the college sits, and the institutional feel of other neighbouring structures

Design of the Catherine Hughes Project commenced in 2016 and CHP was instructed to carry out quantity surveying services. The final design was an intricate layout of 68 ensuite rooms, social spaces and a communal study area all set across 5 floors.

The project was completed on time and within budget and was a great example of the whole team collaborating to deliver a great project for the client.

The building has achieved numerous accolades including the RIBA South Award 2022, a Brick Award for education in 2021 and 2023 Civic Trust Award.
